Women Empowerment Project

In recent times, everyone is pointing on the empowerment of women. Its right to say that women’s empowerment has become the necessity of the time. Women should possess liberty, faith, and self-worth to opt for their needs and demands. Discrimination based on gender is useless and is having zero worth by looking at the growth of women in the last few decades.

Major thrust has been given on community level human resource development through formation and strengthening Self Help Groups and Community Based Organization. Total 320 WSHGs yet to form by our own initiation in all part of operational areas under the programme. As a result big push of paralegal programme as a key mechanism for social legal insecurity have been successful in changing mental strength and confidence to fight against social evils. Thrift and credit programme is the empowerment process, which was economic system, had been control by SHG women members. Micro credit is good focal point, which has reduced dependency on the money lender. It has totally stopped to credit from shuker or Money lender who use to changing high interest which was they exploited. The objectives behind the various linkages, basic need are meets and the people become capable of living without help to others. In this process we took an awareness building for their capabilities and enable them for improving of their health, education and income generation activities uplifting economic status. KGNT provided for the economic opportunity through their active participation in thrift and credit affairs and women empowerment become reality. The organization has been enhancing the life quality women of disadvantage communities by introducing different income generation activities with the support of Government agencies and through credit linkages with bank. Major emphasis was given on developing forward backward linkages with other agencies to carryout hosting programme at their own. For the purpose, net working with credit institution and Govt. agencies has already been made on behalf of the project. Project activities targeted all members of the community including community leaders, women, men and children. Domestic Violence Awareness workshops were given to all beneficiary groups with each workshop catering especially to and for the target group. Activities for the community as a whole included Public Forums, where community members met together to identify the problems within the village in terms of violence and put together a plan on how to find out the issue in each village. The performance brought laughter and sadness to the audience. Throughout the play, the audience was nodding their heads, as they know all too well the reasons behind domestic violence. At the end of the performance active discussions took place within each of the communities.

Building Capacity of Women.

Capacity building is a process of empowerment to enable the people to manage the activities by themselves, during and after our intervention. As a facilitator KGNT views its intervention as tool for capacity building and focuses on organization building and Human resource development. The major thrust was to enable the community organization and women Groups to secure access to civic amenities and facilities offered by the Govt. Agencies.

The women empowerment frame work reconceptualises the development objectives of Gender responsive programme. Rather than focusing on economic objectives, such as enabling women to be more productive or use their time more effectively in order recap the benefits of developments, its views women equality and empowers development objectives in their own rights. Empowerment is process aimed at changing the nature and direction of systematic force, which marginalize women and other disadvantage sections in giver contest.

In implies fundamental redistribution of power within and between families/societies and externally induced process or mechanism of change towards women equality and development. In this process KGNT identified a number of issues for support: Violence against women: women rights through women empowerment: their rights property: and greater participation of women in the decision makes process at family, group, federation and local self Government level.

Traditionally, women have kept to the background in our operational areas where we serve, but the past few decades have seen radical changes. Women have become more visible, vocal and active in public arena. The change has come about partly for economic reasons and partly because of growing awareness of the rights of women. KGNT promote democracy, advocacy and good governance; mobilize people support for honest leadership. As a result women group members are now directly represented in local government. More and more women represents people representative, as the most abused and silent majority, slowly but surely are being empowered.

Women’s movement against Country Liquor

Due to regular training, exposure, meetings mobilization women towards to stop the unauthorised country shop in the villages. The liquor is the most important issue at the village level which may be risk full for thewomen in the society hence the SHG members are facilitated to raise voice against liquor in their villages through rally. A Case Study “Malpara” village in Kandetara gram panchyat under komna block is in the district of Nuapada. Five women SHG were formed consisting 70 women members have been enrolled. Due to easy availability of liquor in MadaKuthi‘(unauthorized liquor shop) in the village, alcoholism among the male members was fast increasing day by day. Under the influence of liquor the torture meted to the women by their husbands, reached on intolerable stage. Such helpless condition motivated women members of five SHGs and they meet Collector Nuapada and request her to stop MadaKuthi‘ in their village. Plan to meet the Collector Awaiting to meet collector at Nuapada.

As a consequence the selling of liquor has been stop in the village and initiatives are getting momentum to launch similar direct action in nearby villages namely Danajhula‘ in Gandamer‘ gram panchyat to stop preparation and sell country liquor at Madakuthi‘

Comparing the present with the past SumoniSabar of Mahulbhata says…, “there is a big difference but I do not know which yardstick to use to measure the transformation. However, I can say with confidence that in earlier times the women were only somehow managing their lives, today they are actively engaged in self-betterment.

Empowerment enables the people to think and solve their problems by themselves, a continuous process which helps the people to live better. It has always been a great challenge to work for creating awareness and empowering people in remote areas. But we did not give up that easily. Firstly, we learnt to respect each other and trust our team. We worked closely and used varied skills to solve the problems. It enabled us to go forward for the development of the disadvantaged step by step. Through information about village helped to minimize the obstacles and sensitize the leaders about the empowerment process and establish a close relationship. We started to participate in community meetings. While in the meetings we started to discuss about our objectives with the people openly and tried to share their opinion through their leaders. This tool showed good results. We also started spending all our time with the community.

It is often difficult to see the change in these communities. Critical eyes are needed to see the actual change. However, we felt proud when the community leader of Kandetara said that the women of the same village went to their office to discuss about their problems face to face and without any hesitation. Now we can say with confidence that in earlier times the women were only somehow managing their lives, today they are actively engaged in self-betterment.

The term women empowerment is all about authority, or the power embarked on women sharing indistinguishable rights. The term refers to the liberation of women from socio-economic restraints of reliance. Women comprise around 50% of the country’s population, and a bulk of them stays economically dependent on each other without employment. Changes in Women’s Attitude- Women should empower themselves by becoming to be aware of their oppression, indicating initiative, and confiscating chances to bring a shift in their status. Empowerment must come from within the soul. Women need to empower themselves by bringing a major change in their attitude.

Observation of International women’s day.

Active participation of women on difference Importance day.

Active participation on women’s day celebration on 8th March as per the calendar planning. Observation were organised every year in different placeswith the SHG Members, students and community leaders and Honourable guest from the Govt, and non Govt. organization. Our observation is that all active participation by women in every and each meeting organised by the KGNT. Main objective behind the programme increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life and women have gained true equality but unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present inequal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. So each year the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements. Mrs. Panda, Chief speaker, expressed the present scenario and compared the past in increasing gender equality, women empowerment and human right of women. He also pointed that discrimination in gender and violence against women not reduced in the locality, so how to ensure equal participation and opportunities in all spheres of life. Need development of women education and empowerment of women.
